Why we need it?
Obviously so that we can share information. For example, an assignment we submitted may contain info from different places compiled into a single document. This will be extremely useful for other students. Plagiarism is another matter*.
In my case, I have many powerpoint presentations on various topics like insurance, welding, internet, etc which i have presented over past 3 years. I also have various assignments on corrosion, titanium, etc. Even though I'm not a Comp Sci Student, I even have VB and autoLISP programs. Also, our final year projects. These contain very important information and techniques that can be used by junior students or other students preparing their own Projects. How can I share this with others in an appropriate environment? So far, the only possibilities are places like rapidshare, textive, etc which provide online storage.
But what is needed is a place where we can upload files and classify them as
Trade (Mech, EC, NASB, etc) > Subject > File Type (Assignment, Seminar, Project, etc)
This can create a vibrant community where different engineers can obtain info on topics not related to their trade from other engineers, ultimately creating all rounders. For example, if I as a Naval Architect, need info on impact weight of wheels of a fighter jet on landing in an aircraft carrier, I should be able to contact an aeronautical engineer easily.
Consider this as a call to all you budding Comp Sci students out there. Take it as a challenge. Facebook, Google, etc are all products that were created at college by students. You can also do it.

*If a baby cries, the solution isn't to get rid of the baby. Similarly, the fact that there is a big chance for plagarism should not hamper the open sharing of knowledge.

well there are plenty of projects which are currently working for exactly the same thing you're takin about, one of which i am associated with. there is cweet, eduguru, and technoz. all there are by different student startups. all are in beta and starting stages! i especially like the idea of cweet. its got so much into it. lets hope to see this soon. (only if somebody decides to work harder lol)
Da, it would be great if you could provide the links. I could only check out eduguru.com and they open only after 15th. But even then, they claim their site gives info about engg colleges. While useful, that is not what I was talking about.What is the site you're associated with?
I tried to do it on a small scale with our student portal www.royalshippies.tk (check out the repository), but since it is exams, the response so far was great verbally, but on-site response has been lukewarm.

you are talkin about the old eduguru which was about engg. colleges. but thats now closed and now ready for the new one which is a network of college students and file sharing platform. cweet is by another guy who was actually the brain behind the actual eduguru. his alias is inkwash. he split with this new eduguru guy last year.
i'm associated with technoz. actually it was sharing up very well until i met with this terrible accident. now i have regrouped and have formed a team of six people. we plan to use a joomla site and by tweaking a couple of addons to work with the mysql database of joomla members so that each file a person uploads will be under his name(like a profile) . this will include an smf forum for discussion. we are just starting with it.

i'm also helpin test eduguru with velu s gautam (who is now admin of eduguru). he has not given me full access yet. i'm also talkin with this ashwin(inkwash) who is now with cweet. maybe technoz can merge with any of these people. i like cweet because its even got twitter apps etc.
all these are just in starting stages. got to move!
well all these projects are stuck in one way or the other because of exams comin every now and then. it would be great if website pros like you join the party and help out with these projects :) . by the way i havent yet visited that site you gave. i'll try to take a look into it although i'm on mobile now and post comments.

First of all, it's great to know that so many people are working on this, although it is sad that none are online as of now. And how did you come into contact with these guys? I really think you should be taking CS and not Mech in TKM. We should stop thinking in terms of job. Anybody who has a talent can shine in any field.
Anway, the things you said are very easy to incorporate: repository and forum with profiles. I used ccboard, remository and community builder for this.
Hey, i'm ready to help in any way I can. But you have to keep in mind that I'm no longer a compsci guy. I'm primarily a naval architect. That said, I still love doing these things as a hobby, so u can count on any possible help from me.

about paacetfestival site, it was made in flash primarly using some xml pre made codes for that box in, box out effects and displayin the data.
